Oh Facebook!

A recent ABC News/Facebook poll asks “Should the delegates from Florida and Michigan be included in the nominating pool at the Democratic National Convention?” Marginally restoring my faith in them, most of my peers oppose this, recognizing that the Democratic Parties of these states violated rules handed down by the DNC, and that for this they ought to receive punishment, as they did.

More unfortunate — and entertaining in a sad, can’t-keep-my-eyes-off-of-the-car crash way –, a number of college- (and high school-)aged students, supporting the inclusion of these delegates, offer defenses for their stand that, at least to me, further manifest the abject inadequacy of our system of education and our civil awareness.

Examples include the following:

“Once again, STATES RIGHTS!” Apparently, the state chapter of a political party possesses certain Constitutional rights to make decisions that the Federal government cannot make? Perhaps this high school student from California better understands the Tenth Amendment (and Fourteenth as well, perhaps) than I, but no political science professor under whom I’ve ever studied as made such claims about the applicability of States Rights to intra-party squabbles.

“It’s suppose to be a democracy after all.” First, I believe that this UMass-Boston freshman intended to claim that it’s supposed to be democracy after all. Beyond that, he fails to realize that our society is not a true democracy (and God forbid that ever should it be!) and that actions have consequences, namely, that a violation of rules generally leads to punishment. Perhaps the Democratic voters of Michigan receive unfair treatment for the actions of the leaders of their party, but I’ve yet to come across a solution that appropriately punishes the Michigan party without doing this.

Perhaps my favorite: “this is partly a democracy – the peoples voice deserves to be heard! and no, im not democrat, i’m republican – hence me actually caring about the people’s voice.. even if it is wrong” (I have nothing to offer here.)
